01 / A clear path to delivery

From a spreadsheet
to a coded dataset.

For researchers who already have a classification framework and need to apply it consistently across answers.

  1. 01

    Bring the answers.

Import Excel or CSV, preview your worksheet and choose a survey or a specific question. Start with a small sample before coding the full set.

  2. 02

    Make the rules clear.

Import or write your codebook. Add the question, study context, definitions and examples. Use multiple labels, category hierarchies and explicit boundaries where needed.

  3. 03

    Review, then deliver.

Check AI suggestions, save human decisions and keep track of versions. Export coded responses, your codebook and category counts in Excel or CSV.

02 / Built around the research task

A useful label
needs a clear rule.

LabelOwl focuses on the practical work between an open-ended answer and a usable dataset. You define what counts; AI helps apply that framework.

Academic researchers

Apply an established codebook to survey comments. Preserve category definitions and the distinction between AI suggestions and human-confirmed decisions.

Market researchers & consultants

Code customer feedback and brand or product survey answers, then prepare counts and coded tables for further analysis or client delivery.

Start small, check the fit.

Test a sample with your own rules and language. Review mislabels and missing labels before scaling up; quality depends on the answers and codebook.

03 / Start with the free beta

A little room
to try your own research.

Verify your email and open the workspace to receive 7 days of Pro and 200 one-time AI coding runs. Welcome runs are valid for 30 days from activation. One successfully saved coding run for one response uses one allowance, including when you run that response again.

No card required. No automatic renewal. After the trial, projects remain available to view and export; Free supports two editable single-question works. Online subscriptions are not available yet.

A few practical questions

Before you begin.

What is open-ended survey coding?

It means assigning defined categories to written survey answers so they can be reviewed, counted or analysed. One response can receive more than one label when your codebook allows it.

Can I use my existing codebook?

Yes. LabelOwl is designed around your categories, definitions and coding rules. Import a supported Excel or CSV template, or enter the categories yourself, then preview the mapping.

Does AI replace the human review?

No. AI labels are suggestions to review. You can change them, confirm a result and retain review status in exported data. A small trial on your own dataset is the best starting point.

What can I export?

Coded responses, codebook documentation, answer–label pairs and category counts. Use Excel or CSV for individual tables, or an Excel workbook containing multiple sheets.

Where does my data go?

The live service stores your workspace data and sends coding inputs to its AI provider, Jev / TypeSafe. Read the current privacy notice and use only data you are authorised to process.
