4-7-8 breathing is a slow pattern: breathe in for 4, hold for 7, breathe out for 8. The breath out is twice as long as the breath in, which makes it easier for the body to settle.
5 short steps, a chart of one round and the mistakes to avoid. One round takes 19 seconds; the usual start is 4 rounds, about 1¼ minutes.

In the Haptic Calm appThe vibration grows while you breathe in, taps gently once a second through the 7-second hold and fades over the 8-second breath out, so you can follow it in the dark with your eyes closed. 4-7-8 is part of Haptic Calm Pro. Haptic Calm 2.0, which adds the breathing methods, is coming soon as a free update.
The rhythm
What one round looks like
In 4 s
Hold 7 s
Out 8 s
The line is the vibration in Haptic Calm: it rises while you breathe in and fades while you breathe out. Each dot is a gentle tap, one per second, during a hold. After the dashed line, shown fainter, the next round begins.
Step by step
The 5 steps
1
Step 1
Get set
Sit upright or lie down, with your shoulders loose.
In the usual instructions, the tip of your tongue rests just behind your upper front teeth. Breathe out fully through your mouth with a soft whoosh.
TipIf the tongue position feels awkward, let it go and focus on the counts.
2
Step 2
Breathe in for 4
Close your mouth and breathe in quietly through your nose while you count 1, 2, 3, 4.
Let the breath fill your belly first, then your chest.
TipA comfortable breath is enough. Don’t gulp a big one before the hold.
3
Step 3
Hold for 7
Keep the air in for a count of 7.
Stay soft: don’t clench your throat or lift your shoulders.
TipIf 7 is a struggle, count faster. The 4:7:8 ratio matters more than the speed.
4
Step 4
Breathe out for 8
Breathe out through your mouth with a soft whoosh for a count of 8.
The breath out is twice as long as the breath in, so empty slowly and evenly.
5
Step 5
Repeat for 4 rounds
That is one round. Breathe in through your nose again to start the next.
Do 4 rounds, about 1¼ minutes, then go back to normal breathing.
TipIn the study below, people did 3 sets of 6 rounds, with a minute of normal breathing between sets.
Make it easier or harder
Easier
Count faster while keeping the 4:7:8 ratio, or start with steady breathing: 4 seconds in, 4 out, no hold.
Harder
Once 4 rounds feel easy, add rounds slowly, keeping the same counts.
Too strained
If you gasp at the end of the hold, the hold is too long for now. Count faster, or rest with a minute of normal breathing between short sets.
Common mistakes
Gulping a huge breath before the hold. A big, fast breath makes the hold harder and can make you light-headed.
Forcing the full 7 seconds while straining. Count faster instead; the ratio is what matters.
Rushing the breath out. It is the longest part, so let it take all 8 counts.
Doing many rounds the first time. Start with 4 and add more only when they feel easy.
Before you start
Breathe gently. Stop and return to normal breathing if you feel dizzy, light-headed, tingly or tight in the chest.
If you are pregnant, or have a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition, ask your doctor before practicing breath holds or long exhales.
Don’t practice while driving, in water or anywhere a moment of light-headedness could be unsafe.

Questions
What is 4-7-8 breathing?
4-7-8 breathing is a pattern where you breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds, hold for 7 and breathe out through your mouth for 8. It is often credited to the physician Andrew Weil. One round takes 19 seconds, about 3 breaths a minute, and the breath out is twice as long as the breath in.
Does 4-7-8 breathing help you fall asleep?
Many people use it at bedtime to wind down. The research so far is small: in a 2022 study of 43 young adults, heart rate and systolic blood pressure were lower after one session of 4-7-8 breathing, but the study did not measure sleep. It is a relaxation exercise, not a treatment for insomnia.
How many rounds of 4-7-8 should I do?
The usual instructions are to start with 4 rounds, about 1¼ minutes, and add more only once they feel easy. In the 2022 study, participants did 3 sets of 6 rounds, with a minute of normal breathing between sets.
What if I can’t hold my breath for 7 seconds?
Count faster. What matters is the 4:7:8 ratio, not the exact seconds. You can also start with steady breathing, 4 seconds in and 4 out with no hold. If you feel dizzy, stop and breathe normally.
Can I do 4-7-8 breathing with my eyes closed?
Yes. Counting in your head works, and Haptic Calm guides it by touch: the vibration rises as you breathe in, taps once a second during the 7-second hold and fades over the 8-second breath out. 4-7-8 is part of Haptic Calm Pro; steady and box breathing are free.
